  • Autumn lightly brushes color onto the placid landscape around the River Rise. Here the Santa Fe resurfaces after traveling more than two miles underground. This area is protected as the River Rise State Preseve and is a great place to hike, boat, and view wildlife. The preserve is connect to O'Leno State Park. You can even walk between the two. It's one of the few places that offers overnight camping in designated backcountry sites.

  • During times of drought, the Santa Fe can drop alarmingly low. This is when extracting water can be dangerous. Water bottling companies are not regulated during these precarious times. A water bottling company can continue to withdraw water according to its permit (say for example 1 million gallons per day) despite a drought. The next image shows the same spot in O'Leno State Park at normal water level.

  • While paddling the river, a dead tree fell and crashed into the water directly in front of my canoe. Upon impact it exploaded into a million pieces. I found this beetle looking out over the debris field. I wondered what the beetle was thinking. Only moments before it had been enjoying its dark, cozy home in the dead but erect tree. Now it seemed to be thinking, "what in the world just happened!" Life on the Santa Fe River.

  • Underground pressure pushes water through a crack in the earth below the river bed and into the river itself, creating a spring "boil." There are many of these along the Santa Fe River, showing just how fragile the ecosystem is, and how unique. Such abundance of fresh, clean water is rare.
