Hagen’s Cove in the Big Bend Wildlife Management Area is a bird-watcher’s paradise. At low tide the bay completely drains leaving the seagrass exposed. Birds of all kinds come to feed on the rich diversity of crustaceans and other invertebrates left behind. Florida’s Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission manages the area. There is a boat ramp, picnic area, observation platform, and a network of bike trails. Nearby is the Sponge Point campsite, one of several overnight stops along the Big Bend Saltwater Paddle Trail. The region is the part of the Big Bend Seagrass Aquatic Preserve, the largest aquatic preserve in the state and one of the largest intact seagrass estuaries in the nation.
