The Nature Coast is a maze of estuaries that stretches for 230 miles from St. Marks near Tallahassee to Aripeka north of Clearwater. Except for a few small towns, the entire coastline is undeveloped. Four national wildlife refuges, two aquatic preserves, and several state preserves and wildlife management areas, protect parts of it. But with other parts of the coastline in private ownership, proposed large-scale developments threaten the tranquil beauty and working-waterfront culture that exists today. This image is of the area where Porpoise Creek empties into the Gulf of Mexico south of Steinhatchee.
