American White Pelicans, North America's largest birds, migrate to Tampa Bay during the winter months where they often rest on the shallow sand bars at the mouth of the Alafia River. The sand bars extend from the islands of the Rich Paul Audubon Sanctuary which protects dozens of bird species, including one of North America's most significant populations of Roseatte Spoonbills. Tampa Bay is the largest open water estuary in the state (encompassing 400 square miles) and defines a region occupied by 3 million people. The watershed includes 6 couties over 2,200 square miles and major rivers including the Hillsborough, Manatee, Little Manatee, Braden, Alafia, and Palm. Photo by Carlton Ward Jr. www.carltonward.com
