This picturesque scene shows a typical rural homestead in the Columbia Highlands. I had just left the privately owned Phillip's Ranch, which shares a boundary with the Colville National Forest. This is the "Wildland Urban Interface" or WUI. The WUI is where homes and private property mix along the edge of true wilderness. Fires that start in the wilderness can quickly grow, threatening homes and destroying livelihoods throughout the WUI. This is partly due to 70 years of mismanagement of our national forests. The Northeast Washington Coalition, a collaborative group of local stakeholders including Conservation Northwest, encourages selective timber extraction in the WUI. The group feels this is one of the best tools for eliminating the overgrown, unhealthy forests that plague 300,000 acres of the WUI in the Columbia Highlands.
