  • The Backcountry Horsemen is a nation-wide group of advocates who work to ensure that public land, such as national forests, is open to horses and their riders. Since the forest service doesn't have the money to maintain all of the trails in the Colville National Forest, the Backcountry Horsemen of Ferry County are a key group of volunteers that maintain the trails. Without horses it would be nearly impossible to hand-carry the equipment necessary to do the work. The five-mile Edds Mountain trail was littered with fallen trees killed by fire. The group has been working on the trail for three years. I hiked to the top were the Backcountry Horsemen and Conservation Northwest, a nonprofit environmental group, teamed up to work on the trail.<br />

George Young, president of the Ferry Country chapter of the BCH, removes the debris cut by Terry (who declined to give his last name). These members of the Ferry County chapter are not a proponent of wilderness. One reason is because they would have to do the same work with hand saws instead of chainsaws, since machines are forbidden in designated wilderness areas. Edds Mountain is within a "roadless" area. The area is managed as wilderness but is not fully protected like a designated wilderness.

  • When I was photographing Long Lake, I passed by a man loading his camper to leave. His name is Gary Hendricks, and he's a retired teacher. When he told me he had been coming to this lake for the last 50 years, I became very interested in his input about traveling to the Colville National forest from his home in Moses Lake about two hours away. Hendricks said it’s the quietude of the lake – Long Lake is closed to motorboats because of rare loons (a cold weather bird that lives around water) sensitive to human disturbances – and the quality of fishing that keeps him coming back. “The first time I came here the lake was alive with fish,” he said. “They were jumping out of the water. I sat on the bank with a fishing pole and caught one after another.” Hendricks was 25 when he first came to Long Lake. He's 76 now.

  • According to Bill Berrigan, and his 30 years of forestry experience, this tree is about18 inches in diameter, not quite big enough to be an old growth tree. But that’s OK. It’s a healthy tree, located on the Phillips Ranch property north of Colville in the Kettle River Mountains. Behind this tree is a wall of smaller trees, known as “dog hair.” That’s US Forest Service land and is in extremely unhealthy condition. Berrigan manages the timber on the Phillips Ranch. Often private lands are better managed than forest service lands due to the lack of bureaucracy.

  • This image was taken on a hike to Jacknife Mountain and Merkel Canyon. The hike started at forest road 080 which led to the summit of Jacknife Mountain. Once at the summit, I hiked off-trail to an exposed ridge just west of the summit and was inside the IRA looking west over Merkel Canyon to Alligator Ridge and the Kettle Crest. The next morning I hiked to Merkel Canyon then back to my car ... all off-trail.

  • Ancient Western Red Cedar have stood for 2,000 years in the Roosevelt Grove of Ancient Cedars. This small 22-acre grove of giants is extremely rare. Ninety -eight percent of virgin timber in the Columbia Highlands have fallen to the ax. Some trees like these exist outside of protected areas. The goal of the Columbia Highlands initiative is to protect what's left of these magnificent forests.

  • Ernie Lieseke is full time contract logger out of Rice, Washington near Kettle Falls. He's been doing it for 25 years. Much of his work is on private land where he removes specific trees determined by the owner to get maximum value from the wood, and production from trees on the property. This tree, although large, was deemed expendable because it had produced numerous saplings that can take its place.
