  • Dowitchers search for food in the shallow waters of the Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuge. With two national wildlife refuges and two state preserves just beyond city limits, Cedar Key is surrounded by nature. These protected areas form the foundation of the community's economic future. The clamming and tourism industries are thriving and wildlife has a permanent home.

  • Hagen’s Cove in the Big Bend Wildlife Management Area is a bird-watcher’s paradise. At low tide the bay completely drains leaving the seagrass exposed. Birds of all kinds come to feed on the rich diversity of crustaceans and other invertebrates left behind. Florida’s Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission manages the area. There is a boat ramp, picnic area, observation platform, and a network of bike trails. Nearby is the Sponge Point campsite, one of several overnight stops along the Big Bend Saltwater Paddle Trail. The region is the part of the Big Bend Seagrass Aquatic Preserve, the largest aquatic preserve in the state and one of the largest intact seagrass estuaries in the nation.

  • A river otter (Lontra canadensis) walks the shore inspecting my presence in its coastal woodlands home. This otter makes its home in quiet flow of springfed Sweetwater cCeek, also the heart of the 1,200-acre Reserve at Sweetwater Estuary proposed resort. Loss of habitat is the number one threat to wildlife on the planet and the Nature Coast is no different.

  • Vehicle collisions, mostly from trains and speeding tractor trailer trucks, pose the biggest threat to wildlife in the Y2Y region. This black bear had been struck only moments before my arrival on the scene.

  • The Nature Coast is a maze of estuaries that stretches for 230 miles from St. Marks near Tallahassee to Aripeka north of Clearwater. Except for a few small towns, the entire coastline is undeveloped. Four national wildlife refuges, two aquatic preserves, and several state preserves and wildlife management areas, protect parts of it. But with other parts of the coastline in private ownership, proposed large-scale developments threaten the tranquil beauty and working-waterfront culture that exists today. This image is of the area where Porpoise Creek empties into the Gulf of Mexico south of Steinhatchee.

  • On September 28, 1896, a hurricane blew apart the original communities spread throughout the Cedar Keys. The largest community was on Atsena Otie Key. After the hurricane, everyone who remained moved their lives a little closer to the mainland and established what is present day Cedar Key. A hundred years after Atsena Otie Key was destroyed, developers attempted to purchase the island and build condos. With so much historical value, and too much risk from the development damaging the fragile environment on which the local economy depended, Atsena Otie was purchased by the state and eventually brought into the Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuge. Now this old cemetery, and the ambiance of Atsena Otie, will remain protected.

  • Looking south from this vantage point above Germainia Creek Valley, the entire Boulder Mountains stretch out as far as the eye can see. These are some of the biggest mountians in all of Idaho. Most of the peaks in this image are above 10,000 feet. A few climb more than 11,000 feet into the sky. Most of what is featured in this image, with the exception of the Germainia Creek motorized corridor in the valley below, is proposed wilderness under CIEDRA.
